Cyren sends a response that indicates if the message is a spam or virus outbreak. It works by generating a hash of the message and submitting it to Cyren. The outbreak protection component in SecurityPlus is licensed from Cyren. SecurityPlus will add layers of spam and virus filtering. Many thanks for any advice as I really need to get this spam filtering problem sorted out - I am almost inclined to go back to the multipop setup we had, because we did not have problems with any spam until I changed everything to direct mail. So I am at a bit of a loss to know whether SecurityPlus would be any more effective in cases like these emails where its short email with a link and it appears to come from someone on your address book, but in reality did not!Ĭould somebody advise on this as I am not sure how spamfilters actually block emails like these if there is no virus within the email and there is no SPF by the "sending mail server" - then how does outbreak protection help bearing in mind that this not some email spreading over the internet as two emails that I looked at appeared to come from people we actually know - so somehow our address book is being scraped as both emails were practically identical but appeared to come from different people.
Is this really necessary, as I was under the impression that the spam filtering policies like PTR Lookup for HELO/EHLO, perform lookup on inbound SMTP Connections and perform lookup on domain passed in the mail command as well as SPF verification.īut for example we got several emails today, where the emails to come from person A, but is coming from somewhere else but Mdaemon cannot tell because the sending domain has no SPF setup and we currently do not prevent mail from arriving if there is no ptr record for incoming smtop connections as many mail servers that are legitimate may not have a ptr record setup. I would imagine it does other things as well?.
They said that for Mdaemon spam filtering functionality to be completely effective I need to buy the Security Plus addon for Mdaemon as this provides I contacted the support people and said that I have followed their guide and yet we are still getting malware emails. Junk marketing emails are a completely separate issue altogether. However once I removed the old email service and multipop, I noticed that we were starting to get a lot more spam (as in malware, suspicious odd emails etc). Have just recently moved away from multipop (as wanted to get rid of the old email system) and use Mdaemon completely. By and Large happy with the product as its straightforward to configure and is reliable etc. What do other schools do? Do students at your school have an exchange account, or do you give them a webmail account whether provided by your LEA, or RM easymail etc.I have been using Mdaemon as mail server for nearly a year. It would also put us in more control, so we can monitor use of e-mail better, and also all the e-mail addresses would be associated with the students active directory accounts, which has a huge advantage in it's own right. This would solve all the problems with having different usernames and passwords, and I think it would encourage more use of the e-mail system. I've put forwards the proposal of having a seperate exchange server onsite for students, and giving them an address like we do for staff, and using outlook web access for them to use it.
The disadvantages to this are functionality is fairly limited, it's access through our internt line so sending and receiving large files can be an issue, and the main one is they all have a seperate username and password to access this system, which they're forever forgetting and it's a PITA to reset them. How do you do it? At the moment all our students have a webmail account provided to them by medway council giving them an address.
